Steve changed my life. When we met, I was in one of the worst health flares I’d ever experienced. The combination of my Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, POTS, ME/CFS, Gastroparesis, Mast Cell Activation Syndrome, and other compounding factors had left me – as a high-achiveving attorney – mostly bedbound. Up until this point in my life, I had worked with some of the “top experts” for my diagnoses, and I had gone to different types of physical and occupational therapy regularly for well over a decade. They barely made a dent, and every day – even the good ones – felt like a fight against my body and the world. I would routinely experience signfiicant health setbacks, never going more than a few weeks without a new serious obstacle.

After my first session with Steve, I felt dramatic improvement. Over the next few months of our work together, my symptoms associated with the above-mentioned diagnoses dwindled to the point that I began to question whether those labels still applied to me.

I used to experience chronic and debiltating pain. Now, I rarely experience pain at all and any pain I do experience is minor, short-lasting, and I now have the tools to eliminate the pain. I used to regularly incur serious injuries that were challenging to recover from. Now, I rarely get injured and any injuries I do sustain are much more minor than they used to be, I’m able to recover very quickly, and I have the tools to expedite and ease the process. I used to become dizzy and lightheaded and faint regularly; now I don’t. I used to struggle tremendously with my digestion, and I even wondered if my digestive system was permanently damaged. Now, my belly is flat 99% of the time, and my digestion is smooth sailing. I used to have immense difficulties with breathing, which only added to my unbearable fatigue. Now, I breathe comfortably and easily, and I have energy and stamina. I used to need reading glasses, and I used to experience a range of vision-related challenges. Now, I don’t. I used to feel like I didn’t know how to use my body. Now, I feel like I finally have the manual and I’m mastering it – and I’ve become an athlete!

I’ve been working with Steve for almost 1.5 years. This is the first time in my life I’ve felt like a healthy person, and this is the longest stretch of time I’ve ever gone without a health setback. Most of my life was about pushing through and surviving. With Steve on my team, I finally get to live.

In my 23 years of competition in the sport of gymnastics, through 2 NCAA Championships competing for University of Michigan, 2 Big Ten Championships, achieving All American and Collegiate National Champion and training as a 2016 Olympic hopeful, there has not been a coach, mentor, or trainer that has had a more thorough and all-inclusive approach to taking my athletic performance to the next level than Steve Madama.

I've had incredible coaches and trainers and mentors in my life, from my club coach (Russian Olympic coach) to the University of Michigan coaching staff, and all of them played critical roles in my growth and success. However, to have gone from a great gymnast to an elite gymnast breaking into the top 2 percent of the competition-- Steve was the guy that made the difference for me. His expertise, care and attention to detail resulted in the fastest, most effective gains in my career.

The first time I met Steve, it was during a consultation with one of the most prestigious Sports Neurologists in Southern California, also a good friend of mine (I’ll refrain from sharing his name for privacy purposes). Steve conducted a quick, painless demonstration on the effect that jamming a joint has on an athlete’s strength.  Jamming ankles and fingers are a weekly if not daily occurrence in my sport, so he certainly caught my attention with this revelation! From that moment on, I was intrigued and knew I had to convince him to work closely with me.

Following that, I spent 3 years working with Steve regularly, where he honed in on enhancing my respiratory, proprioceptive and vestibular systems. I use glasses and contact lenses because I’m technically legally blind. I always thought the only option for improving my static acuity was surgery, but he provided vision exercises which resulted in SIGNIFICANT improvements. He also designed exercises targeted specifically towards scar tissue from a prior surgery. These are aspects of my training that I would not have considered otherwise.

Steve is a coach, a mentor, a friend, and in my opinion the future of professional sports neuroscience! He has earned my respect not only because of his professional expertise, but because of his genuine care for those he commits to working with.

After 7 months of trying all traditional approaches of rehabilitation and medications I had almost given up hope of walking normally and living life without pain. I, fortunately, was given a referral to Steve and within a short period of time was able to completely cut out all pain medications (which had very undesirable side effects) and saw huge improvements in my physical recovery.

My biggest issue was dealing with pain. Steve teaches you exactly why you get pain in the first place and gives you useful and manageable ways of dealing with it. These methods I now integrate into my everyday life.

Over the years I have seen many physiotherapists and health care professionals. I can honestly say Steve has outshone them all. Not one session goes by without Steve’s 100% focus on your condition. Every session is different, keeping it interesting and progressive.

It is amazing what the body and mind can do. Steve’s integrative approach to both will not only help with recovery it will improve your life in so many ways. Steve helps you realise your true potential whether you are someone with any injury wanting a better life or an elite athlete wanting to better their game. I can only recommend you do yourself a favour and book a session.

After years of seeking traditional treatments and having little success, I was ready to accept living in pain and losing control of my body’s functionality. Steve gave me hope when conventional medicine said I was ‘fine’. He was the first person to sit down and evaluate the whole picture before developing my treatment plan. Every session, we dig deeper into treating the root cause instead of treating the symptom. He is patient, he takes the time to answer all of my questions, he celebrates my successes, and every session I leave with new tools to overcome obstacles on my own in the real world. Steve’s approach has led to incredible progress in short period of time. I have reclaimed my body and developed a sincere appreciation for it's capabilities  This continues to be the most rewarding experience in my journey toward full recovery.

When I was first referred to Steve I was recovering from an injury and sought a trainer who could both help me rehabilitate and simultaneously improve my performance. As a roller derby referee approaching 70, I had little time to waste. Steve’s unique approach to training taught me that I didn’t need to train so hard, I needed to train smart.  Steve puts the athlete and his or her nervous system at the center of his training. His unique approach, based on neuroscience, is individualized for each of his clients. He’s had me do visual skills training, mobility work, balance challenges, vestibular work and sensory integration skills in order to help me develop as an athlete and as a person who needs these skills to successfully navigate the world.

I get bored easily but am never bored with Steve because each session is different and I am having fun while I work. His comprehensive and individualized approach to training, regardless of whether his client is recovering from a stroke or is a high level athlete, is an indication of his vast knowledge and desire to help people meet their goals.  Steve’s intense dedication to training athletes while using the most advanced techniques in his field is unique among trainers. His coaching promotes performance enhancement and prevents injuries. My continued injury free performance as a ref would never have happened were it not for Steve. I’d recommend Steve to athletes and active people of any age who are seeking to improve their game.

After having hip labral surgery, I went through the traditional physical therapy protocol. However, I did not see any changes in my pain or mobility. As a former college athlete, I wanted to be challenged and experienced frustration because I could not be as active and dealt with pain daily. While I was skeptical at first about Steve's unique way of addressing my injury, I was willing to try anything to help reduce my pain. Steve addressed my injury in a completely new way, educated me about my brain and body connection, and allowed me to feel like an athlete again.

Steve provided me with numerous drills and tools that addressed a much larger issue that my injury originated from. In addition to my hip, for many years I had nagging ankle and low back issues that did not go away. Once I started to address my nervous system, I felt change occur. Not only did the sessions with Steve and work I did at home help me become active again, but it educated me about the importance of my nervous system and how impactful it is on my body and brain connection.
