Pain Relief

Pain is a learning tool and a normal part of our human experience. Without the ability to feel pain, humans would not survive. However, living in pain is not normal and the latest research suggests that the more you understand how pain works the better off you will be.

Pain is 100% of the time an output of the brain. This does not mean that peripheral receptors and tissues aren’t involved but it does mean that they can only send danger signals to the brain. Pain is a decision or opinion made by the brain based on the perception of threat. Injury does not equal pain and pain does not equal injury. Pain is an action signal and not always an indictor of damage. Chronic or persistent pain is due to a highly sensitive nervous system and how the brain processes information coming in from our environment and body. As a result of the above, the brain should be the primary target for training in people experiencing pain and performance blocks.

Steve uses a comprehensive neuro assessment and testing process with his clients to identify which neural systems are currently underperforming and contributing to their pain. Ultimately, he provides them with specific drills that will improve the areas of under-active input or poor integration that may be causing their pain experience.

Threat Bucket Model

The Threat Bucket Model below is a representation of pain as an undesirable output of an over threatened nervous system. All types of stressors both physiological and psychological have an accumulative effect on our nervous system. Sub-optimal performance in any of these areas are almost always interpreted as threats. When stress/threats fill the bucket high enough to reach the threshold spout we can get a pain output or any other unwanted output that can lead to a decline in health and performance.
